How to Connect a DVD Player to a TV1. Connect the cable to the back of the DVD player. The type of cable used with a DVD player varies depending on the date the DVD player was manufactured. Plug the cable into the port on the back of the DVD player. Below are four types of cables that can be used to connect a DVD player to a TV. • HDMI: An HDMI cable is a single thick cable used on most modern high-definition televisions. These connect to a port on the DVD player labeled "HDMI." The shape of the HDMI connector on the end of the HDMI cable matches the shape of the HDMI port on the back of the DVD player and TV. • Component: Component cables also support HD video. Contains five colored connectors. Red, green and blue are video connectors. The separate red and white cables are audio cables. Simply plug each colored cable into the corresponding colored port on the back of your DVD player. • Composite: Composite cable (sometimes called "AV" or "RCA") is an older specification. It doesn't support HD video, only standard definition (SD) video. It is similar to a component cable, but has only one yellow video connector, and two red and white audio connectors. Plug the yellow cable into the yellow port on the back of the DVD player, and the red and white audio cables into the red and white ports on the back of the DVD player. • S-Video: S-Video is another older specification that does not support high-definition video, but provides a higher-quality standard-definition connection than composite cable. The S-Video cable has 4 pins and a small tab. Match the pins on the S-Video cable with the holes on the S-Video port on the back of the DVD player and plug it in. In addition to the S-Video cable, you also need to connect two red and white composite audio cables, because the S-Video cable has no audio signal. • Many new TVs no longer support S-Video. 2.Connect the cable to the back of the TV. Depending on the type of cable you're using to connect your DVD player, connect it to the port on the back of your TV. The HDMI cable plugs into the port labeled "HDMI." Component and composite cables will connect to the color-coded ports on the back of the TV. The S-Video cable connects to the S-Video port by matching the pins with the holes in the port. • Some newer TVs have shared component or composite ports. If you're connecting a composite cable to these ports, connect the yellow video cable to the green port on the back of the TV. 3. Plug the DVD player into the power supply. Make sure there is an electrical outlet near the TV that the DVD player can be plugged into. If you don't have one, you can use a power strip to increase the number of outlets near your TV. 4. Select the source on the TV. On the back of the TV, each port has a source. Press the source button on the TV remote to cycle through the sources until the DVD player connects to the source. Most DVD players have a splash screen that will appear on the TV when you find the right source. |
